July 15, 2026. Blackdog Biscuits can’t be at the harbour market today.
The Tobermory Marketplace is a fantastic venue and we really wanted to be there today. However, the poor air quality makes us setting up in the heat and smoke a risky adventure for us.
Our monitor’s purple light emitting diodes signal too many floating particles in the air column. The dawn outside our home is also a green-brown hue. Yeahhhhhhh, we can’t sling dog & cat treats during this extreme weather (atmospheric conditions) event. We’ll reschedule for NEXT WEDNESDAY, 10 A.M. UNTIL 1 P.M., JULY 22ND.

We’re prototyping a CAT TREAT for Felinus domesticus. Its product name will be 50/50 Cat Treats. “Will your cat like the treat?… … … meh, there’s a 50/50 chance that YES, your house-cougar will like it”.
Test market results: yep, that’s what’s indeed occurring. Meanwhile, the household dog goes bonkers for them (because they recognize the BDB packaging).

07:15. We had the Moon. We had stars when we left the rock farm. By the infamous RONA LIGHT POLLUTING sign, we had white-out conditions. Nope. We turned around and went home. NO BLACK DOG BISCUITS AT THE OWEN SOUND FARMER’S MARKET this weekend. 🙁

Sweet potato processing?!
No markets July 5th and 6th.
TS is recovering from her carpal paw surgery. Yesterday’s Wiarton market tested her limits. Back Dog Biscuits will try returning July 9th at Tobermory Harbour.

Why do the sweet potato biscuits cost more…(?)…
…than the wheat and peanut? Answers: (i) TS uses peanut FLOUR as she mills it herself. You can ask her WHY she does that instead of using peanut butter; (ii) TS peels, shreds, dehydrates 20 pounds HOOMAN-GRADE (as a dog would think it) sweet potato, and mills it; (iii) see this video as evidence of TS’ efforts…

(iv) when there’s 2 dehydrators running for at least 24 hours, it taxes our off-grid power system (when it’s sunny, the PV panels generate all the kW we need [when it’s cold and rainy, we must rely on our propane powered GENNY-GENERAC]); (v) TS makes these biscuits in small-batches… so there’s no economy of scale (no Purina Dog Chow nor MilkBone [blech] factories); (vi), And that’s why TS must charge a premium for the sweet potato biscuits. TS’ efforts justify the prices for all of the product line for that matter!
By the way: PN has witnessed what the kitchen looks like after a sweet potato milling session. Imagine taking a cooked pumpkin AND a fully dried out gourd, and tossing it into a gasoline-powered turbine-fan. Yeahhhhhhh. IT HITS THE FAN. Cleanup at the rock farm, eh.

While the majority of customers were happy to pay the listed price for cookies — others were hesitant. Here’s why I think Black Dog Biscuits (BDB) are worth the cost (compared to mass-produced, commercial products):
- Companion animals rely on humans to keep them healthy, happy, and safe. They’re not my property — for me to treat as I see fit. As a steward, my animals can expect high quality shelter, top-shelf nutrition, and non-violent interactions.
- BDB uses locally-sourced ingredients. Chatsworth Honey provides us with unpasteurised honey (at retail prices). Ingredients such as seeds and milled starches are purchased at our local Owen Sound Bulk Barn. BDB is pumping cash back into the Bruce Peninsula economy.
- BDB is a 1 womyn-run operation. TS has the entrepreneurial spirit, unlike me. TS is a gifted chef without a false sense of modesty. TS and I silently muse whenever we go to a restaurant or a pet food store — this/that is delicious! I wonder if TS can learn to make it? I have witnessed TS’ core belief — one who values self-reliance. I believe our world needs more people with these qualities. When you purchase her product, you are supporting such human attributes.
- Black Dog Biscuits (BDB) use human-quality ingredients. Commercial treats are designed to maximise profit! And the laws governing pet food vary wildly. I suspect there are dogs suffering gastrointestinal distress due to spoiled and/or rancid foodstuffs. I understand that dogs can eat some disgusting items on their adventures. However, there are consequences to that (vomiting, diarrhoea, shortened life-span, toxic effects) behaviour.
