January 24/26 dog jacket update.
I can finally reveal Tobey’s latest dog jacket creation. It was a custom job for the organizer of the Owen Sound Farmer’s Market.
Ms. Kailey Lang is a gifted artist and is successfully managing a wide assortment of business personalities (vendors) at this Saturday event. And KL can pull this off rain-or-shine, year round.

Why do the sweet potato biscuits cost more…(?)…
…than the wheat and peanut? Answers: (i) TS uses peanut FLOUR as she mills it herself. You can ask her WHY she does that instead of using peanut butter; (ii) TS peels, shreds, dehydrates 20 pounds HOOMAN-GRADE (as a dog would think it) sweet potato, and mills it; (iii) see this video as evidence of TS’ efforts…

(iv) when there’s 2 dehydrators running for at least 24 hours, it taxes our off-grid power system (when it’s sunny, the PV panels generate all the kW we need [when it’s cold and rainy, we must rely on our propane powered GENNY-GENERAC]); (v) TS makes these biscuits in small-batches… so there’s no economy of scale (no Purina Dog Chow nor MilkBone [blech] factories); (vi), And that’s why TS must charge a premium for the sweet potato biscuits. TS’ efforts justify the prices for all of the product line for that matter!
By the way: PN has witnessed what the kitchen looks like after a sweet potato milling session. Imagine taking a cooked pumpkin AND a fully dried out gourd, and tossing it into a gasoline-powered turbine-fan. Yeahhhhhhh. IT HITS THE FAN. Cleanup at the rock farm, eh.

Sooooo, do you have free time Saturday?
You can now get your biscuits at our shelf in TruFood Cafe (Hwy 6 & Lindsay Rd. 5).
PN was pleasantly surprised by the gluten-free offerings at this bakery-cafe-artisan-presentation… on highway. I think they used oat-flour in their lemon-blueberry muffins. TS was impressed by their respectable toasted bagel (she makes her own… so that’s authentic praise).
So, what does the grand entrance to our home look like?
Friday July 19, 2024… I took this 39 second video at the entrance of our future home. Huh… I didn’t know that about these dog cookies!
As we are settling into our temporary home here in Lion’s Head, your Black Dog Biscuit creator shared the following bits of trivia about the product with me (as I finagle with my chores’ list).
- Sweet potato flour. It’s not purchased ready-made. It takes 2270 grams of raw sweet potato will make 446 grams of dried sweet potato flour. This is after peeling, (razor-sharp) mandolining, dehydrating for 15-24 hours, and milling the sweet potato flakes! And yes, I insist TS use a butcher’s chainmail glove (especially after witnessing a recent mishap [cringe]).
- Preparing fresh Black Dog Bisuits for packaging. To make the dog cookies shelf-stable, TS further dehydrates them for 10-12 hours. This gives the Black Dog Biscuits that characteristic crunchy texture (that dog’s adore). By the way, I like calling the food dehydrator and jerky maker the “SnackMaster Y2K”! Oh yeah! 🙂
- The peanuts are raw, not roasted. While the legumes are blanched (to deskin them), the peanuts are only baked only once (to preserve their nutritional value).
